Many men today, balding or not, have opted for the full-shaven head.
Father of this trend? --possibly the late, great Yul
Brynner! You might remember him from such films as The Ten Commandments!
But today’s go-for-it baldies include actors like Vin Diesel, Patrick
Stewart and the late Telly Savalas, athletes like Charles Barkley,
comedians like the late Flip Wilson, musicians like Michael Stipe of REM
and musician/actors like Henry Rollins (at least sometimes bald). Such
men follow in the proud tradition of Martin Luther and Elias, a.k.a.
“the bald prophet.” There was even an episode of Seinfeld dedicated to
the glamour and handsomeness of the voluntarily-bald man. And of course
Pablo Picasso, who was extremely popular with the ladies, was no
stranger to head shaving.
In recent years, head-shaving, besides the Armed Services, was
associated with a subset of the punk movement known as “skin,” and had
some unsavory political connotations. But voluntary male baldness today
is mainstream, and any regular shopper at his local pharmacy might
encounter men buying shaving cream or gel, and quality razors such as
the Mach I, and discussing the use of same with store personnel on the
TOP of the head, not the face!
Voluntary baldness is certainly a lot cheaper than implants, a toupee or most medication. Its only known potential side effects are razor cuts to the scalp, and it’s for this reason we recommend anyone shaving his head for the first time himself consult an expert, or guide, first!
