Propecia (Finasteride) for Male Pattern Baldness

Propecia is a hair loss replacement drug available only through your doctor with a written prescription, and approved for use by the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA).

Propecia is taken once-a-day in pill form, and used for the treatment of certain types of male pattern hair loss in men. Propecia reduces dyhydrotestoterone (DHT), a male hormone, a key cause of hair loss. Too much DHT in men creates male pattern baldness and hair loss.

Results are best when Propecia is taken every day for 12 months continuously. Its use allows men to possibly keep their hair and maybe regrow some lost hair. Sometimes it is necessary to take Propecia daily for three or more months before it starts regrowing hair. If after 12 months of continued use it doesn’t work, it should be discontinued as any further use is not likely to produce hair regrowth and benefit. Propecia will only work if it is used ongoing as a daily treatment over the long haul for hair growth. Interrupted or discontinued use of the medication will reverse the results you got when taking it. Within 12 months any regrown hair will likely fall out after stopping treatment.

Propecia was developed to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss on the top of head and middle front of head in men only. It does not work for receding hairlines at the temples. Propecia is for use in men only designed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. It must not be used by women or children.

A 5-year clinical study demonstrated the effectiveness of Propecia. 90 percent of men who took Propecia had visible results. 48% of men experienced hair regrowth. 42% of men who took it had no further hair loss. 25% who took a placebo (sugar pill) experienced hair regrowth. This was based on an assessment of photographs by panel of dermatologists. 66% of men who took Propecia regrew hair, as measured by hair count. All of the men in the study who were not taking Propecia lost hair. 77% of men taking Propeica improved their ratings by doctors versus15% of men who took a placebo. Many men in the study said their bald spot got smaller, their hair loss slowed down, and the appearance of their hair improved.

Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use Propecia. These women must not touch crushed or broken Propeica tablets because the active ingredient causes birth defects in male baby’s sex organs. A doctor should immediately be consulted if a pregnant woman touches Propecia because of its active ingredient Finasteride. Propecia tablets are coated to prevent interaction of the Finasteride pill during usual handling if the tablets are not broken or crushed.

Some studies show Propecia, in a small number of men, had sexual side effects like less sexual desire, difficulty in achieving an erection, or a decrease in the amount of semen. Two percent of men experienced these sexual side effects. When men stop taking Propecia the sexual side effects went away.

Most men will not grow back all their lost hair. However, Propecia is effective in hair regrowth in half the male population with hair loss within 12 month of taking the oral pill daily.
