What Causes Baldness?

Going bald is something that no man or woman wants to think about. But unfortunately it is a reality that a lot of people must face. Baldness can affect anyone at any age. Can baldness be prevented? Yes and no. Read on to learn what causes baldness, and what you can do to prevent it from happening to you.

There are several types of baldness but the one discussed most often is pattern baldness, both male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. Pattern baldness is a hereditary condition in which the hair starts to fall out on one section of the head. For some people, it may start as a receding hairline and for others it may start as a balding area on the top of the head. Contrary to what people once believed, pattern baldness is not inherited from your mother's side of the family. Researchers have now found that pattern baldness can come from either side of your family.

Another cause of baldness is inflammation. Sometimes, inflammation can scar the hair follicles and cause permanent hair loss. Once the hair follicle is scarred, there is no way that new hair can grow. Certain skin conditions are associated with this type of hair loss but no one is sure what actually triggers the inflammation.

Alopecia areata is a cause of baldness, and it is classified as an autoimmune disease. The cause of this type of disease is unknown and usually the affected person is in good health. Some researchers believe an individual may be genetically disposed to develop this type of hair loss and a virus or other environmental factors may trigger it. The good news is this type of hair loss is not permanent and the hair usually grows back.

Baldness can also be caused by a shock of stress to your system that is either physical or emotional. This can come from surgery, a death in the family, metabolic disorders or anything that upsets the normal balance of your body's system.

Are you still wondering what causes baldness? There are other causes of baldness that can be prevented. For example, excessive hair styling or pulling the hair too tight can cause traction alopecia. This type of baldness is temporary unless you develop scarring of the hair follicle.

Poor nutrition can cause your hair to fall out. This is seen a lot in people who go on crash diets or in those who have eating disorders. Certain medications such as those to treat gout, arthritis, depression and even birth control pills can cause hair loss in some people.

Hormonal changes are a major cause of hair loss. Pregnancy, menopause or an under active or over active thyroid gland are triggers of hormonal changes in your body. The good news is that once the hormone levels are stabilized your hair will grow back.

Therefore, if you have ever wondered what causes baldness the answer can be found in the article above. Keep in mind that if you experience sudden hair loss you must see your doctor right away because this could be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treated right away.
